Global Crop Production Estimates by Remote Sensing
Compared with the 2012 estimates, the 2013 global production of main crops is as follows: wheat, 705 million tons, up 4.1 percent; rice as paddy, 739 million tons, up 1.6 percent; maize, 944 million tons, up 0.3 percent; and soybean, 202 million tons, an increase of 1.2 percent compared with 2012 (table 5-1). For the thirty major producers and exporting countries, wheat production increases 2.3 percent over 2012 estimates, rice up 0.8 percent, maize up 1.7 percent and soybean up 1.6 percent. The rest of the world has achieved spectacular trend-based increases (+13.4 percent for wheat, +8.4 percent for rice) and decreases (-6.1 for maize). Soybean stagnates at about -0.8 percent.
The 2013 crop production in China can be described as "globally average," with the following productions and differences with the previous year: maize 205,632 thousand tons (up 2.3 percent), rice (as paddy) 207,082 thousand tons (up 0.7 percent), soybean 13,321 thousand tons (down 3.5 percent) and wheat 106,784 thousand tons (down 0.2 percent) (Table 5-2).
